En cunas de esmeraldas, de esta fuente
aljófar nace o fugitiva plata,
cuyas márgenes claras no dilata
en cuanto su cristal adoleciente;
en undosa después firma creciente,
que de grillos de hielo se desata
sin llagar donde muere, nunca mata
la fatiga y la sed de su corriente.
¡Oh retrato, oh espejo de la vida,
que en vanas plumas de sus fines vuela,
más engañada y menos advertida,
a donde la razón no se rebela,
siguiendo una lección apetecida
por quien ha de morir, por quien anhela!
