- CLXXII - A la esperanza, defendiéndola

Es la esperanza un término infinito
en plazo que ni llega ni prescribe,
y alentada pasión que sólo vive
del carácter que al cielo deja escrito.

Es este triste error, común delito,
lícito, porque el gusto le concibe,
y es pena porque en gloria se recibe,
lisonjera infusión del apetito.

Dale a beber de amor su devaneo,
y causándole sed que nunca mata,
para ser tolerancia halla este medio.

No puede ser cumplido, y es deseo,
facilita lo mismo que dilata,
y es ofensa con nombre de remedio.
