¿Cuándo en su obstinación y osadía,
Fortuna, mediremos nuestro intento?
¿Cuándo no le dará mi rendimiento
fuerza, si no blasón a tu porfía?

¿Cuándo no adularán la tiranía
más mis ofensas que mis sufrimiento?
¿Cuándo a mil siglos del mayor tormento
le dará el hado intermisión de un día?

Mas ya que el no esperar es desengaño,
y al desengaño aviso no le pido,
más que noticia al tiempo de mi daño,

cogiérame el agravio prevenido,
como quien echa menos el engaño
entre desesperado y advertido.
