- XLI -

Tarde es, Amor, ya tarde y peligroso
para emprender ahora que mis quejas
hallen justa piedad en las orejas
que concluyó el desdén más riguroso.
Porque a tantos avisos no es forzoso
idolatrar los hierros de unas rejas,
ni juntar así nueva a penas viejas
permite el tiempo a un ánimo dudoso.
Tus cadenas, Amor, tus hierros duros
mejor ya en mí parecen forcejados
que peligrosamente obedecidos;
bienes dudosos, males son seguros,
y los desdenes más solicitados
avisos con escrúpulo admitidos.
