- CLXXIII - Qué es la esperanza
Es un lícito engaño la esperanza
y tregua con que el bien miente al cuidado,
sombra de amor, deliquio que adulado
vive de cultivar lo que no alcanza.
De fe tiene el aliento y la tardanza;
mal que anticipa el daño dilatado;
susto y desdén contra su efecto armado;
alivio quiso ser y fue venganza.
Rayo de luz que cuando alumbra ciega,
y contraria ilusión al ser perfecto;
firma que niega amor y en blanco escribe.
Su término es presente y nunca llega,
y es causa que, muriendo de su afecto,
de no cumplir lo que promete vive.
