¿Dónde me lleva el áspero camino
por pasos de costoso advertimiento?
A dejar derramadas por el viento
justas quejas del tiempo y del destino.

Si miro atrás mi error y desatino,
no es poco galardón el escarmiento,
mas, ¡cómo tiraniza el sentimiento
cuando al mismo entender saca de tino!

Salga la voluntad del cautiverio,
que no ha de idolatrar el albedrío
la más sensible parte de los daños.

Descifrarán los hados el misterio,
y quedará de ajeno desvarío
librada mi advertencia en desengaños.
