De La elección por la virtud

Si Cleantes de noche agua sacaba
para vender, por estudiar de día,
y en la atahona donde el pan molía
nombre a sus letras y virtudes daba;

si Plauto, con ser sabio mendigaba,
y a un pastelero mísero servía;
si Euménides en huesos escribía
a falta de papel, que no alcanzaba;

si ha habido quien en el imperio altivo
por el cetro trocando el aguijada
a célebres historias dio motivo;

si a Pedro pescador Roma agradaba,
no será mucho, aunque pobre vivo,
por letras venga a ser... o Papa o nada.
