De La elección por la virtud

Acuérdome una vez haber oído
una fábula en que ejemplos toco,
notables de un ciprés, que en tiempo poco
hasta el cielo creció desvanecido.

Burlábase de un junco, que vencido,
su segura humildad juzgaba en poco;
mas con un viento recio al ciprés loco,
quedando el junco en pie, se vio abatido.

Su humilde estado y pobres ejercicios
estime mi Sabina, aunque haya hecho
burla el ciprés de su honra y hermosura;

que cuando en los soberbios edificios
abrase el rayo el más dorado techo,
la más humilde choza está segura.
