Mi propio amor entiendo que es la cierta
causa que mi ganado sin contento
se rige apena en pie; no lluvia o viento,
ni pasto amargo de montaña yerta.

Mas ¿qué cuidado es éste, si la incierta
muerte luchando con el alma siento,
y, Filis cruda, nunca me arrepiento
de verte siempre de piedad desierta?

¡O, si al menos sobre este monte yerto,
adonde lloro de continuo llanto,
aquel pino cubriese el cuerpo mío

y pasando por este valle umbrío
dijeses, Filis, con amargo llanto:
Aquí yace mi triste amante muerto!
