Si con poco nos basta, ¿por qué, Argio,
porque no, y animoso yo y prudente,
me breve censo estimaré igualmente
que de América el ancho señorío?

Dulce es de un gran montón de plata mío
suplir mi falta, y ¿no es tan suficiente
cogida el agua de una breve fuente
a mitigar la sed, como de un río?

Bebe pues de el; que suele arrebatado
Guadalquivir con súbita avenida
llevarse a quien lo bebe mal templado.

¿Quién hay, quién hay que con lo asaz se mida?
Ni charcos este apurará afanado,
ni entre ondas fieras perderá la vida.
