Después que me persigue la violencia
de fortuna cruel, de injusto hado,
vivo en parte mejor desobligado
de la prolija ley de la paciencia.
Será comodidad, si no prudencia,
un libre proceder desengañado,
porque el bien que le queda a un condenado
es esperar segunda vez sentencia.
Tal vez acierta más el desatino
que la templanza, a preservar la muerte
del que afligido su pasión tolera.
Pues si el despertar sólo es camino
de limitar injurias de la suerte,
¿qué tiene que temer el que no espera?
