De este antiguo ciprés, que en Menfis pudo,
verde obelisco, aguja ser famosa,
mi fortuna elección hace forzosa,
no menos por funesto que por mudo.
El tronco animará metal agudo,
que, informando corteza misteriosa,
oráculo será de voz quejosa,
vaticinante en mi carácter rudo.
Quejas, seguras ya por no escuchadas,
aunque, por no escuchadas, no perdidas,
endechará de hoy más su mudo acento;
donde, si a la piedad encomendadas,
de su dueño no fueran admitidas,
apelarán al tribunal del viento.
