Estas de admiración reliquias dinas,
tumbas, anfiteatros, coliseos,
del tiempo son magníficos trofeos,
imperiales ya pompas o ruinas.
Tú, mortal, que esto ves, y no terminas
el plazo a la ambición de tus deseos,
¿no adviertes de los Fabios y Pompeos
tantas, en polvo hoy, fábricas divinas?
A la inmortalidad cierra el camino
el que escalar pretende en vano el cielo
con el que su ambición fausto permite.
La virtud es el medio peregrino,
el valor y el talento prestan vuelo,
sin que el tiempo contrario lo limite.
