Las pompas con que Roma vio superba
las estrellas un tiempo amenazadas,
del padre de los siglos habitadas,
poca son hoy ceniza y mucha hierba
que al poderoso culto nos reserva
serie de años a edades canceladas;
esclarecidas obras decantadas
con aliento vivaz Fama conserva.
En los anales sólo, en los archivos
de la inmortalidad, gloriosamente
muertos renacen para siempre vivos.
Cuando el valor no adquiere el accidente
de aplausos y de obsequios ilusivos,
al tiempo engaña, y al virtud no miente.
