El soberbio africano que oprimida
a Italia tuvo el tercer lustro entero,
hartó de sangre su sediento acero,
del Capitolio en deshonor vertida.
Dígalo en Canas tanta esclarecida,
frustrada audacia, y díganlo primero
Trebias y Trasimeno, cuyo fiero
tributo espuma en sangre fue teñida.
Mas este mismo pecho a quien no pudo
resistir el valor del pueblo osado,
decoro militar, genio de Marte,
rinde en campaña armado el dios desnudo;
que al violento arpón del ciego alado
cede la fuerza y no aprovecha el arte.
