Un filósofo griego ha dividido
la humana suerte en cuatro, porque es una
la que sigue feliz desde la cuna
al hombre hasta el sepulcro, y otra ha sido
la que infeliz y adversa le ha seguido
del nacer al morir siempre importuna.
Con uno fue piadosa la fortuna;
tardó y al declinar su voz ha oído.
Con otro tuvo el curso presuroso;
vino ha la juventud y le ha negado
a la vejez el gusto y el reposo.
La cuarta diferencia me ha tocado,
y si en el mundo he sido el más dichoso,
¿quién duda que soy ya el más desdichado?
