No alcanza el buen cincel un pensamiento,

si docta mano en imitar se emplea
concepto agudo, ufano entendimiento.

Ya rendida si opuesta al movimiento,
la materia, la forma que la afea,
delito es vil de torpe mano rea,
culpado ingenio, cómplice instrumento.

Labrar quise en tu pecho mi ventura,
dispuesto a buena estaba, y mala suerte;
erré, (como ignorante) la escultura.

¡No te quiero culpar, oh mármol fuerte!
Quiero culpar mi ingenio, y mi locura,
pues sólo supe en ti formar mi muerte.
