Hércules invencible fatigado
no fue, cual yo de la cruel fortuna,
aunque venció la sierpe en la cuna,
aunque luchó con Gerión doblado;

aunque del Rey de fieras abrazado,
aunque opresor del globo de la luna,
aunque admirando la infernal laguna
dejo al trifauce espantador atado;

que resistir vuestro desdén injusto,
sustentar vuestro nombre con mi canto,
y aprisionar mis amorosos celos;

es más duro ejercicio, y más robusto,
que vencer monstruos, que tener los cielos,
que atar el Cá, que amedrentar su espanto.
