- XXXIX - Pagando crece la obligación
La luz de la razón, o muerta, o ciega,
dormida tiene el alma y el sentido,
quien mira vuestros ojos atrevido,
y luego Fénix, que los ve no ciega.
Pues no goza la gloria donde llega,
ni el hospedaje os paga el recibido
así se da el castigo merecido,
y a vos la justa obligación os niega.
Yo por pagaros os rendí mi vida,
y rendiré lo que me dais de nuevo,
pero hallo la deuda más crecida:
Porque si el alma cada instante os llevo,
es el pagaros gloria tan subida,
que cuanto más os pago, más os debo.
